Scarred Not Silent: Stories from the intersections of survival

When the Light Flickers: Leaving SSD and Finding My Way Back

Rodney Washington Season 2 Episode 39

On the sixth day of the Festival of Light, I reflect on a moment when my own flame nearly went out.

This episode explores what happened when I decided to come off Social Security Disability and return to work. The intention was firm. The motivation was real. But the process was far more complicated than the programs promised.

I share what it felt like to navigate a system that encourages independence while placing most of the responsibility on the individual to figure it out on their own. Finding an employment specialist became its own full-time job. Frustration grew on both sides. Mine did not fade quickly.

This conversation is about resilience, disillusionment, and the quiet strength it takes to keep moving forward when the path back to purpose feels blocked. It serves as a reminder that survival is not a passive process. Sometimes, it is a daily act of relighting the flame.
